Drunk Clown #1

One of the hardest places to stop smoking is at work. A regular smoke with a co-worker was a good excuse to stop staring at my computer screen. I've begun to take a sketchbook to work in order to do more drawing when I would normally step out for a butt. Here is the first sketch that I (regretfully) coloured with pencil crayon which doesn't really scan very well. Ever since I saw the movie "Shakes the Clown" starring Bobcat Goldthwait, I've found drunk clowns funny. The drawing was also inspired by Dave Louapre and Dan Sweetman's series "Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children" specifically "A Cotton Candy Autopsy". I first came across these guys from their work featured in the self titled "Mr. Bungle" album, co-produced by the great John Zorn(see Mr. Zorn's work here). It takes a little digging, but you can find the album artwork at Mr. Bungle's website, "Bungle Fever". It is a flash site so I can't provide a direct link. Check out one of my favorite Bungle songs, "Stubb (a dub)" under Audio > Live/Rare > Stubb(a dub).

I'm very happy to hear that you're sticking to your endeavor! It's gonna be hard for some time but, I'm sure that you've already begun to feel the positive effects of not smoking.

I'm also ecstatic to hear that you've began drawing again. You've always been a wonderfully talented illustrator IMO, and I'm sure that many of your close friends would tend to agree. Not to mention you're uncanny talent for humour. ;) I'm greatly looking forward to seeing more of your illustrations appear on your blog!

Personally, I've had a small phobia (distrust?) of clowns since watching Poltergeist and IT (likely at too young of an age)... but, it wouldn't stop me from going to the circus! ;) Keep at it Doug!

Clowns fucking rock!

I'm rarely a fan of coloured pencils. Get yourself a small watercolour set, or scan your stuff in and colour it digitally. I love the sailor hat on the dog. Is that Clown drinking "Beer" brand beer?
